The Auerklamm gorge system — split into upper and lower sections — cuts through 180 million years of Triassic limestone, exposing fossil-rich strata that once formed the floor of the Tethys Ocean. Spring snowmelt from the Ötztal Alps feeds the Ötztaler Ache river, which has carved this narrow canyon over millennia.
The gorge walls rise 40 meters in places, narrowing to less than two meters at key passages where smooth water-worn channels guide visitors through a geology lesson written in stone.
Canyoning emerged here in the 1990s as alpine guides adapted rock-climbing and spelunking techniques for descending watercourses. The Auerklamm became a proving ground for the sport in Austria — its accessibility from Oetz village and moderate vertical drops made it ideal for developing standardized safety protocols. Today the site anchors the Ötztal's outdoor tourism economy, drawing 15,000 participants annually to its beginner and intermediate routes. The lower canyon, Alpenrosenklamm, offers gentler grades; the upper Auerklamm challenges with higher rappels and deeper pools.
Modern canyoning here involves abseiling down waterfalls, sliding through polished rock chutes, and swimming across emerald pools fed by glacial runoff. Guides secure participants with harnesses and helmets, teaching rope techniques before each rappel. Water temperature hovers near 8°C year-round — neoprene suits are mandatory. Routes take two to four hours depending on section choice and group pace. The canyon environment shifts with the seasons: June brings peak meltwater flows and thundering cascades; September offers calmer conditions and clearer visibility into the pools.
The Ötztal valley's tourism infrastructure evolved around such natural features. Cable cars and hiking trails connect neighboring peaks, but the gorges remain accessible only on foot or by descent. No artificial lighting penetrates the canyon depths — daylight filters through the narrow openings above, creating shifting patterns on wet stone. Conservation efforts since 2010 have limited daily group sizes to reduce erosion on anchor points and preserve moss colonies that cling to the shaded walls. The gorge closes during spring avalanche season and after heavy autumn rains when flash flood risk rises.
